A Gold Star Sister's Memories

Portrait of a young soldier, superimposed over a map of Southeast Asia.

Debbie Muellner is a Gold Star Sister, having lost her brother, Gary Kunshier, when he was just 19 years old. Gary's death profoundly affected Debbie and her family. She wondered if she'd ever hear her dad, usually so full of joy, laugh again. Her mother coped with the grief by sending letters to fellow grieving parents who'd lost a son in Vietnam, whom she identified by combing through the obituaries each day.
