Mac Talks '68: Group 7

Charles Underwood, Jill Burkland, Judy Kim, Evelyn Early, and Shenaz Coyer share
what they remember about the Vietnam War while being on campus at Macalester College in 1968.

We faced Martin Luther King being killed, Bobby Kennedy being killed. And with Eugene McCarthy running and opposing the war and the vivid pictures of Vietnam, it was all happening... in 3 months. So this was a lot. We made it OK for people to protest. We began something here that I am proud that we left behind. We stood up for our principles and we fought hard.

Mac Talks ’68 is a partnership of Macalester College and Twin Cities PBS. This StoryCorps-like event was designed to capture the experiences of the Macalester Class of ’68 and how they were impacted by the tumultuous events of 1968.

Through facilitated small-group discussions, they address such issues as: How did the Vietnam War affect our lives? How were we impacted by the Civil Rights Movement? The Feminist Movement? The political upheaval?
