The bravest combat action I ever saw happened just 30 meters from my fighting hole.

I was on the hill called Contien, in the DMZ, a Marine Combat Base. During the night we heard an enemy tank move up in front of our position. The tank was covered by the jungle so we could not see it. The jungle was 100 meters away.

We had a 106 Recoiless Rifle position next to my position. At 9am the enemy tank fired a HEET round at the 106 rifle. The round went high. Immediately the 106 rifle crew went into action. They fired a 106mm HE rocket back. The tank fired another round. This time we saw a flash from the tanks gun. The tank round got closer but missed. The 106 rifle crew fired again. They missed as well.

There was a total of 11 rounds fired back and forth. Each time the round hit closer to their target. On the 11 round fired by the 106 Rifle crew, there was a great explosion in the jungle. The enemy tank was destroyed.

There is no protection from enemy fire for the 106 rifle crew. They fought toe to toe facing death on every round.
