The Draft Notice

Four score and seven years ago
When I was 23
My husband got a letter
That he wouldn't share with me

And I knew in my heart
What that letter would say
It was a draft notice
That would take him away

Away from his parents, his friends and his wife
And all he held closely and dearly in life
For we had been married for such a short time
I'd hardly had time to realize he was mine

It took less than a year
To train up my man
To be a combat medic
And fly to Vietnam

No wife can really ever know
What her husband in Nam, really went through
He seldom talks about it much
Unless with buddies he keeps in touch

But I know how lucky I really am
For my husband came home to love again!

Two young men--one shirtless and with glasses, the other in a dark t-shirt--in the jungle.

Doc Kelley, 1/501 101 Infantry Co. Jan 1970- Nov. 70.
