It was pitch black. We were literally hanging on to each other's shirts or else you'd get lost.

David Bertagnoli grew up as an Army brat who loved to read, so he was eager to volunteer for the Marines and Vietnam. Here, he tells three stories that sum up his sometimes adventurous and sometimes sad experience as a gunner in the 1st Marines.
